Very rarely am I moved or affected by the passing of an artist or celebrity but Saturday morning when I got news that Gil Scott Heron passed away I felt a sharp pain in my belly that I haven't felt in a long time. Gil is one of few artist that I hold in high regard and that I can never tire of listening to. He is like the wise older god on the block that you always had time for to sit down and listen to the jewel being dropped for the day. You recognize and accept all flaws that come with this friendship. I remember like yesterday working at the Stussy store and "Pieces of a Man" would play and like clock work Freddy would turn it off when the title track would come on. Not the most conducive music to shop to. Before the cd could make its way to the trash I took it home and terrorized my then girlfriend by playing the album over and over again. To the point were it was the cause of many an argument between us but like any good friend you fight for the friendship no matter who or what stands in the way. I was fortunate to see Gil perform at SOB's twice. I can walk away with no regrets or dreams of seeing one of my heros perform. Thank you Gil...

After picking up the self titled first album of "Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band" in a church dollar bin which I only copped because I recognized "Cherchez La Femme"...this record has been on steady rotation on the decks uptown...then I found out they are originally from The Bronx...the rest is history...side note August Darnell one of the original members left the band to form the legendary Kid Creole and The Coconuts...I'm sure from the snippets below you will recognize the tunes that have been sampled...enjoy...

This is a photo of my roommate Angela's room in the midst of her last days of staying with me uptown...It's been a month since she has been gone and the crib is not the same...I wanted to say thank you for being the best roommate ever over the past four years...I've been in my space for over eight years now and I have had my share of kook ass people live with me...there was the black frat dude but he belonged to a white frat..would leave 40oz and chinese food containers consumed and empty out in the living room for about three days till I flipped out...the japanese girl that has her man move in on me on the low, break my toilet in the middle of the night and I had to fix it...kicked her ass out...it definitely has been a bumpy ride with roomies but then I struck gold with Angie but nothing lasts forever and it was about time at age 32 to live on my own and be able to walk around with my balls out burning mango incense on a Sunday...thanks Ang...

Recently I was explaining to a friend about all the performers that used to be on the train...and I'm not talking about the old black dudes singing doo-wop or the kids doing flips for basketball money...there used be the dude on the uptown 1 train that did stand-up comedy, the homeless dude that rode a horse made out of a broomstick and two pillows while singing "Oye Como Va", the puerto rican magician on the Manhattan bound E train...his final trick was releasing a dove from a silver plate...there are tons more that I can mention...reason I'm bring this up is because last week these two drummers got on the train while I was reading and rolled my eyes and sucked my teeth being that I'm an old ass and I wanted to read my book in peace on the way home...the minute them doors closed these dudes got busy with it...I was a second away from getting up and doing a quick top rock...I gave them a dollar which translates to $50 bucks on the train and kept it moving...

I was super fortunate to be invited to a private screening of Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest documentary last night. Good looks to Bahr Brown for the invitation. I will say right off the bat due to the negative internet feedback the doc has been receiving also the double thumbs down that Q-Tip has been campaigning towards the movie and the shitty trailer that was leaked over four months ago, I did not walk into the theatre with the most positive vibe. I was expecting 90min. of bickering and fighting with the end result being the villainization of Q-Tip(somebody has to be the bad guy...right?)
I was completely wrong kids. The movie is a fair view of four friends that organically came together to form one of the most influential hip hop groups of my time. Truth is that Tribe is without a doubt the baby and brainchild of Q-Tip. By far the creator and organizer. As always with great power comes great responsibility. Does Q-Tip come off as an asshole in the
movie? Fuck yeah he does...but that comes with the territory. Being around creatives since I was 13 it is typical behavior to be a control freak, moody fuck and yes...asshole at times. That being said, Tip I feel media wise pertaining to Tribe has always played it cool and never to my knowledge taken credit for the sound and vibe. The movie explains that he produced all three first Tribe albums but always put Tribe first and never himself. It was about the whole crew getting shine because at the end of the day Tribe is Tip's creation but could have never done it alone. Without Phife, Ali and Jarobi there is no Tribe and there is no Q-Tip. I don't want to give too much of the movie away, you just have to go. If you are a half self respected Tribe Called Quest fan...cough up the 12 beans and check the movie out when it drops. Below are the Tribe tracks that help mold, shape and completely fuck my mind up. Queens is in the house...represent...represent...sent...sent...

Holy shit I remember it like yesterday hearing all these songs for the first time and feeling like nothing in the world could fuck with me...thank you for the memories now and in the future...
